Flow state

Mohawk River, late fall

I’m not saying I love to exercise. But the blue moon feeling when everything feels right? That’s a different story.

It’s that sensation of legs pumping like pistons while you glide the highway on your road bike.

You don’t feel the work. There’s an engine you guide along, but the mind is elsewhere. You notice every cricket and still react to obstacles with precision.

Rowers have a name for this condition – swing. Coders call it flow.

It’s been years since I have hit that flow state while working out. I’m getting closer though. And I’ve picked up a few tricks to help.

This blog is about reaching that place. I’ll write about motivation, software, simplicity, gear, iPhone and anything else that strikes me as remotely related. I hope these articles will be interesting for you – whether you run for charity, walk to lose a few pounds, or cycle to get faster.

With the exception of doing yoga several decades ago — and a six-month stint at a gym, I’ve never thought much about exercise. Well, perhaps thinking is the only thing I’ve done about exercise. But now, recovering from a concussion and brain bleed, and benefitting — over the last five weeks — from wonderful physical therapy, I know I have to integrate taking care of my body into the full-time task of taking care of my life. Your approach, your search for that flow is appealing to me. Maybe I should be concentrating on discipline, technique; I shall, but I want to find something else. I look forward to your blogs about all those things you hope to integrate into your life.

Maybe the physical therapy is the silver lining of the concussion. You need the exercise for recovery. But if you make the workout fun, you’ll stick with it longer and the effects might be farther-reaching.
