I play by myself
One of the most powerful workout hacks is to rely on your friends. I built running into a regular habit when I finally tried this one.
Find someone at your level and promise to meet up with them at specific times on scheduled days. The commitment is important – nobody wants to break a promise to someone else.
Friends push each other for more. It’s also just fun to gab while hammering up a hill.
Even if you exercise alone, tell your friends. Knowing they will ask (or rib) you about it keeps you on track.
Don’t have any friends?
Buy a dog.
On a serious note, dogs are even better than people because they’re always grateful for a walk or run. If you don’t want the hassle of owning a pet, stop by the animal shelter and volunteer to give one of their dogs some exercise.

I don’t have any friends, I’m too busy running and my dog’s legs are too short.
No excuses: if you own a small dog, train it to use a skateboard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0
I think another critical element is making workouts fun. It’s easy to think “I need exercise, it’ll make me feel better” but it’s easier to follow through if the the workout is it’s own reward.
So find a sport you like, get some great workout clothes, etc. I just bought a great new Titus Mt. Bike. Spent way too much on it but I love it am still amazed at the balance on that bike 6 months later.
An investment in exercise reaps healthy dividends: more energy, longer life, less sick time.
Sweet.
I’ve been riding the same Cannondale road bike since right after college. I have had my eye on a beautiful carbon fiber Trek for too long now.
Partly I want to reward myself when I really get pull it together. But the other part is foolish pride – I don’t want to get passed while I’m riding an expensive bike.
I think a little splurge might ramp up the fun.
